Serve Tactics for a Winning Tennis Game

The serve tactics are one of the top two most important parts of the game of tennis (the other being the return). If you don’t effectively hit the serve, then you won’t have much chance to win many matches. The serve takes practice to master, and I’ll show you some ways to do just that.

When you start the match, elect to receive. That way you’ll have a game to get into the match, and you may catch your opponent with some nerves or not fully warmed up. When it’s your turn to serve, go down the middle of the box into the body. This increases your margin for error.

As you get into the match and especially if you have a lead, you can begin to work your serve out wide or down the “T.” Attempt to get a high percentage of first serves in to put pressure on your opponent.

Practice the serve by attempting to hit ten out of ten second serves per side (that equals no double faults). Then get in eight out of ten first serves. Don’t move to the first serve until you reach your goal for the second serve. This will help your serve consistency and overall effectiveness.
